2020 Nucs - orders taken from March 1st to March 31st 2020

posted Mar 3, 2020, 3:52 AM by Helen Mooney   [ updated Mar 3, 2020, 3:55 AM ]

Orders are now being taken for nucs which will be ready in the middle of June, subject to good queen rearing weather in May.
Please bear in mind we are a small operation so only prepare a small number of nucs each year. We do not supply over wintered nucs at this stage.

At the begininng of June, customers will be contacted with information on where and when to collect your nucs. In order to give you full attention, a time table will be in operation on the night and you will be given a 15 minute slot.  That day  is chosen based on how soon bees need to be transferred into a hive, so your equipment must be ready.  The bees will come in a returnable 6 frame national nuc box.  The queen will be marked and clipped. If you do not keep bees in national hives, please think of a conversion method as we cannot supply anything other than national frames.

If you have ordered through this site you will be contacted several times between now and June: once to acknowledge receipt of the order, when queens are mated and laying and finally one week before delivery to make sure you are ready.  If you are not ready, we sell that nuc to the next available person- this is only for the welfare of the bees who will, by now, be cramped into a 6 frame national nuc box. We can't guarantee another nuc later on.

2018 Queens Out Mating This Week

Nature has its own mysterious way of catching up after a prolonged winter.  Surviving bees have, of course, proven to be warrior like in terms of survival and in advancing to the next phase of the colony life cycle: swarming!!   The result? We have been able to spare enough nurse bees to rear grafted larvae into queen cells, so that, our eager beginners' class will be able to start their beekeeping journey by mid June as was tentatively predicted a month or so ago. Please get in touch via the 'bees for sale' link  to reserve your five or six frame nuc.

Nuc Update: 1st May 2018

Our stronger colonies have filled their first brood box and of these, the cell raising colonies will soon be given a second brood box.  In the meantime, I noted sealed drone boood last weekend which suggests that drones could be emerging within the next 3 weeks.  They will need a week to mature before this years DCAs (Drone Congregation Areas) are established.

We have not started queen rearing as yet so nucs can not be considered until the middle of June.  This can mean an agonising wait for beginners who just want to get started, but believe me it is worth waiting until mid JUne to guarantee you are buying a well established nuc with a well mated queen.  Do not be tempted to buy nucs any sooner.
