Queen Mating in full swing

This is the iconic photograph of a queen and drone mating, taken by the Koenigers.  Dr Gudrun Koeniger, formerly of Halle University, kindly gave me permission to use this photograph in my NIHBS genetics pamphlet.  Getting a queen from larval stage to fully and completely mated, with drones reared and selected by the bee breeder, is indeed a skill worth pursuing.  There are so many potential pit-falls.  Luckily, we have a few new queens now mated and laying, so beginners can  keep an eye on the nuc updates to find out when they will be for sale.
